Field hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley

Section 1 college commitments

I’m going to be keeping a running list of all the Section 1 verbal commitments to play field hockey at the next level. I will update this list as I receive more commitments. It’s early in the process however as players cannot sign with a school until the signing period begins the first Wednesday in February. I’m sure a number of athletes are thinking over their decision about where to attend school next year. The few I’ve received thus far are as follows:

Emma Bozek (Lakeland) – University of North Carolina
Shannon Scavelli (Lakeland) – University of Michigan
Annie VanWagenen (Rye) – Williams College
Katie Knox (Bronxville) – Bates College
Breanna Roadarmel (Clarkstown South) – SUNY Morrisville
Jillian Green (Horace Greeley) – Middlebury College

The awards keep coming…

Hey Section 1 field hockey fans,
The awards keep coming for some of the section’s best. Lakeland’s Gianna Bensaia, Emma Bozek and Shannon Scavelli and Mamaroneck’s Jessica Gardiner were named to the New York All-Region team.

Looking ahead to next year…

Just because the games have stopped, doesn’t mean the field hockey conversations should. The offseason can be a fun time for talking about the season that was and looking ahead to next year. I guess a logical place to start would be what happens to the best of the best between the 2011 and 2012 seasons? In my opinion, the four best teams in Section 1 this year were Lakeland, Mamaroneck, Bronxville and Rye. I didn’t get a chance to see every team play, but from what I saw and the way the season played out, I believe this is the cream of the crop. Lakeland and Mamaroneck dealt with some key losses to graduation heading into this season, but made it back to the state finals. They will once again get hit hard, especially Lakeland who loses maybe the top two players in the state in Emma Bozek and Shannon Scavelli. Rye wasn’t hit as hard coming into this season, but loses its core group of Emma Brinkman, Annie VanWagenen, Tori Virtue and G.G. FitzGerald. I’m not questioning the metal of these three teams for next year — they seem to always have talent — but what’s everyone’s opinion on what these teams could look like heading into the 2012 season? Can Lakeland four-peat?

That leaves Bronxville, who unlike the teams mentioned above will be returning a lot of key players including some who really stepped up this year in leading the Broncos to the state final four. Do the Broncos have the best shot at repeating as section champs next season?

Would love to hear what our readers think and if you have any intriguing storylines to discuss, please post.

Class B championship: Lakeland vs. Garden City

Lakeland and Garden City began to warm up nearly an hour ago, then had to wait out the overtimes and penalty strokes in the Class A final. It had to be stressful watching that go down. We should be under way in about 10 minutes or so.

They just added time to the clock, we should be ready in 18 minutes now.

Lining up now … and they are playing.

Shannon Scavelli gets Lakeland in front four minutes in, drives home the insert from gab Celentano on the game’s first corner.

Hornets scoring in bunches again. Emma Bozek from Scavelli on a corner eight minutes in, 2-0 Lakeland. Garden City takes a timeout. Ridiculously dark cloud hovering over the field, by the way.

Garden City four penalty corners in last 14 minutes, but can’t break through. Allie O’Mara keeps sweeping the ball away or Krista Servidio is making stops in goal.

Halftime. Lakeland 2, Garden City 0. Hornets did seem to loose a little intensity late in the half.Stats: Both teams have four shots on goal. Trojans have an 8-3 penalty corner advantage.

The second half is under way.

Lakeland was killing time with strong midfield play, but Charlotte Castronovo made it a one-goal contest with 17 and change to play.

Scavelli gets her second of the game, 48th of the season, with 11:14 to play. Lakeland up 3-1. Just a rip on a corner.

Five minutes left.

And that’s all. Lakeland threepeats. Dog pile in front of the goal. Final is 3-1.

Class A state finals: Mamaroneck vs. Sachem East

Good morning field hockey fans: Debbie Schechter here reporting live from Cicero North Syracuse High School as we are about 15 minutes out from the start of the Class A state finals between Section 11’s Sachem East and Mamaroneck.
To set the scene, both teams are now warming up and as we wait, here is the scenario; if Sachem East wins, this will be there first state field hockey title in school history. If Mamaroneck wins, it will be the school’s first title since 2004.

Update 1: For the first six minutes of the first half the game, possession has gone Mamaroneck’s way as the Tigers have been able to keep play on their offensive side. Their attack has been doing well so far but the Tigers haven’t found the back of the net yet.

Update 2: Injury time out with 20:47 left in the first half for Sachem East as one of the players for the Flaming Arrows goes down on the 15-yard line at the high school. Both teams have huddled up. It is dead silent here at the game.

Update 3: Sachem East’s Kristen Bagley was injured on the play in Tiger territory and good to see her walking off the field gingerly with the assistance of the Sachem East coaching staff. Play resumes. It looks like an ankle injury for Bagley.

Update 4: Mamaroneck had an opportunity in front with a little more than 17 minutes left in the half but a nice save by Sachem East goalie Samantha Alvino. T.O by East with 17:00 to go. Play now back.

Update 5: “Pressure” chant going up by the Mamaroneck faithful that is what the Tigers do and 12:15 left in the half, Gardnier takes a shot from the right side that Alvino deflects high.

Update 6: 9:26 left in the first half, Sachem East gets the first penalty corner of the game and blasts the shot wide.

Update 7: 8:05 remaining in the half, Sachem East gets another penalty corner but fails to convert. Tiger defense holds serve, time out by Mamaroneck with 7:34 left in the first half.

Update 8: About 6:20 left in the half, the Tigers defense plays well as the Flaming Arrows squander another opportunity.

Update 9: 4:06 left in the half, Alicia Meglio has an opportunity in front of the net but Alvio makes another tremendous save.

Update 10: 1:43 left in the half, Cara Trombetta of Sachem East was given a green card by the officials.

Update 11: We are at halftime, with Tigers and the Flaming Arrows tied at 0-0. The offense of the Tigers has been playing well and has had their opportunities but just haven’t been able to get past the wall that is Flaming Arrows goalie Samantha Alvino.

The teams are back on the field and play resumes.

Update 12: 26:12 left in regulation, the Tigers Jessica Gardiner sent the ball in from about 20 yard line and it went wide of the cage.

Update 13: 25:00 left in regulation, the tigers had their first penalty corner of the game but couldn’t convert from in front of the net.

Update 14: 21:00 left in regulation, The Tigers had their best opportunity so far as Jessica Corbin takes a shot from the left post but Samantha Alvino has been a brick wall in the cage for the Flaming Arrows.

Update 15: 19:30 left in regulation, Sachem East gets their third penalty corner of the game but Tigers goalie Nina Kumar makes a kick save in front of the cage, her first save of the game.

Update 16: 16:48 left in regulation, Sachem East had three opportunities in front on their fourth corner of the game, Kumar made two great saves and on the third opportunity, the ball went wide left. 16:16 left in the game, time out Mamaroneck.

Update 17: 15:45, Kumar is matching saves with Alvino and coming up really big for the Tigers right now as we are still scoreless.

Update 18: 13:40 left in regulation, Sachem East broke up the mamaroneck corner.

Update 19: 11:55 left in regulation, Hannah Fitzgerald sent the ball in wide left of the cage.

Update 20: Stil scoreless as we head to under 10 minutes left in regulation. Mamaroneck’s playing better as of late on offense as they get another corner opportunity.

Update 21: Tigers came up empty on the first opportunity with 9:18 left but now with 8:18 left, they can’t convert.

Update 22: Mamaroneck’s having trouble as they can’t convert again on another corner opportunity. With 7:31 remaining in the regulation, the score is still 0-0 as Sachem East takes another time out. Both teams have none remaining.

Update 23: The Tiger faithful is making their presence known as they try and will their team to score. Under seven minutes left in regulation, the pressure is on and the defense is coming up big right now with Sachem East keeping the ball in the Tiger end.

Update 24: 1:40 remaining in regulation, Jessica Corbin has a shot on goal with Hope Joyce trailing but can’t convert.

We have reached the end of regulation. Scoreless through 60 minutes and now we are heading to 10 minute overtime sudden victory periods of seven on seven action.

Update 25: Five minutes of intermission is over, we are beginning the first 10 minute overtime of 7 on 7 play. It is sudden victory play.

Update 26: 7:56 remaining in the overtime, Sachem East’s first opportunity to win the game falls short on the corner as it goes wide right.

Update 27: 5:08 remaining in overtime, Tiger’s Molly Cohen sent the shot on net with Meglio with a chance but the shot went wide left and over the side line.

Update 28: Scarlett Fugazy made a huge play on a Sachem east 2 on 1 and Sachem East will get the corner. 3:54 left, Bagley, who returned into the game towards the end of regulation came out again due to injury. Mamaroneck takes another time out as Kumar made a big save on the left side to keep the Tigers hopes of a state championship alive. 3:36 left in overtime when the time out came.

Update 29: Sachem East has gotten the better of Mamaroneck so far in overtime. Sachem East got another corner with 2:22 left in overtime and it goes wide of the cage.

Update 30: Another penalty corner for Sachem east with under a minute left in the overtime, Kumar kicks it away.

Play ends in the first overtime, 0-0 is the score through 70 minutes of play, the Tigers will have one more opportunity to score as a second 10 minute overtime. If no one scores through 80 minutes of play, then it’s on to penalty strokes to decide the Class A state championship.

Update 31:The second overtime has begun.

Update 32: Corbin had an opportunity on net but Alvino made the save. Fitzgerald had the put back opportunity in the first two minutes of OT but couldn’t convert.

Update 33: 5:49 left in OT, Sachem East with an opportunity but Kumar has the kick save. 0-0 still.

Update 34: Mamaroneck gets the corner with 4:57 left in OT. They couldn’t make the inttial pass but Hannah Fitzgerald takes the second effort shot wide.

Update 35: We are at 1:55 left in OT and still no one has scored. It might come down to strokes.

Update 36: Final minute of overtime with Sachem East with the possession. Tigers are on the defensive.

That is the end of overtime and now we are going to penalty strokes. Each team will have five opportunities to determine the Class A state champion. If that is not enough, it will be sudden victory strokes.

Jessica Gardiner went out for the toss and it seems to me from my vantage point in the press box that Sachem East will go first.

Update 37: Through one round of strokes, 0-0 but Sachem East gets the first but Corbin ties it through two rounds.

Update 38: Tied through two rounds.

Update 39: Both scored. 2-2 in strokes

Update 40: Scarlett Fugazy has the chance to win it in regulation strokes but Alvino comes up big for Sachem East. It’s 2-2. And now we head to a sixth round of strokes. Meglio will shoot for Mamaroneck.

Update 41: After the toss, Sachem East will again go first.

Update 42: Jessica Caruana scored for Sachem East. Jessica Gardiner took the shot for Mamaroneck and it went off the post. Sachem East won in 3-2. in strokes
