The 2008 field hockey season officially commences this week and I, for one, am pumped.
Let’s take a look at some of the opening-week games:
Wednesday, Sept. 3: Holy Child and Rye Country Day School open their respective seasons. The teams last played in the New York State Independent Schools title game last November at Fieldston and RCS walked away with the title. Both teams were hard-hit by graduation, but both return good nucleuses.
Thursday, Sept. 4: Rockland County will be buzzing as three of Section 1’s finest make the trip over the Tappan Zee. Mamaroneck, led by Cathleen Smith, Ellen Williams, Charlotte Gardiner and Anna Reddicliffe face North Rockland, featuring senior Morgan McGowan. Mahopac will take on Clarkstown South and Carmel will be up Route 304, facing Clarkstown North. Ursuline will host Arlington.
Friday. Sept. 5: I wish I could clone myself on a day like today. Check that, I don’t think field hockey fans would want two of me running around covering games. That is scary. Anyway, if you are in the southern Westchester area, make the trip to Bronxville as reigning state Class B champ Rye, and new coach Emily Fitzgerald, face 2007 Class C sectional finalist Bronxville at 4:45. You can’t ask for a better season-opener. Rye has three of Section 1’s top players in back Courtney Burke and the speedy forward tandem of Torie Stearns and Olivia Nabhan. This trio was instrumental in Hudson Valley scholastic women’s field hockey continue its dominance with a fourth consecutive gold medal. Rye also possesses two excellent backs in Mimi McCormick and Julianna Kennedy. Bronxville counters with lightning-quick forwards Jessica Murrer and Brooke Gogel, steady, consistent midfielders Caroline Harris and Rachel Kim, back Bizzie Howitt and veteran goalie Anne Piper. … At 7 p.m., coach Barb Deppe takes her John Jay-East Fishkill team to Lakeland where the Hornets begin without the outstanding Class of 2008 — Caitlin Collins, Chelsea Robinson, Cassie O’Mara, Tara McGovern and Leah DiSisto. Even though this fantastic fivesome moved on, Lakeland boasts midfielder Megan Bozek and back Jillian Caffery starters and major players on the 2008 gold-medal winning Hudson Valley team. Senior Liz Gonzalez, who shared keeper duties with DiSisto last year, is the starter, and Lakeland has a pair of promising freshmen forwards in Emma Bozek and Shannon Scavelli. Oh how I would love to be at this game. When JJEF and Lakeland meet, it is always an excellent game. … Somers will be hosting its annual tournament. The Tuskers will miss the talent of three-year starting goalie Amanda Heyde and high-scoring forward Lizzy Russo., who both graduated. … Rockland County features Nyack playing at Suffern. The Mounties have the County’s finest forward tandem in seniors Cara Eichenberger and Jenny Califano.
I came under plenty of fire last week when I posted my Class B pre-season rankings. Apparently, I angered many when I had Lakeland third behind Putnam Valley and Rye, respectively. I have been wrong before, numerous times (just ask my wife). I would not be surprised though if it is Lakeland holding the Section Class B title plaque in early November.
The only question I have is will I be allowed to cover any Lakeland home games or will I be banned from the school grounds?
It just seemed like yesterday that Rye was winning a state championship and then Hudson Valley added its fourth consecutive gold medal. Man, how time flies by.
The 2008 field hockey season will commence Friday, Aug. 22 as the Conference I and Conference II teams begin practice. Conference III will open Monday. Don’t ask me to explain why because I still can’t figure out this crazy system.
Anyway, here a few things, right off the stick:
Lakeland, the 2006 Class A state champ and last year’s state finalist, drops to Class B joining defending state champion Rye and sectional finalist Putnam Valley in what should be an outstanding year, capped by sectionals. Pleasantville, who gave retiring coach Rosemary Sotherden a sectional title, jumps from Class C to Class B. Meanwhile, Hastings drops to Class C.
New faces in new places: Former Brewster coach Emily Fitzgerald is the new Rye head coach, replacing Kevin Kelly who was let go following the 2007 state championship. Kelly is the new Manhattanville coach. … Former Manhattanville player and Pleasantville grad, Kristen Coffey returns to her alma mater, succeeding her former coach, Rosemary Sotherden. … Former Rye assistant and Lakeland alum Niki Berman travels down Route 1 to Rye Neck, replacing Mandy Mahncke. … With Fitzgerald at Rye, Brewster hired former John Jay-East Fishkill player Corin Racicot. Pror to learning of Racicot’s hiring, I asked former Brewster coach and player Genene Morehouse and Brewster softball coach Michelle Gosh if they were considering the job, but they both said ‘No.’ … At Bronxville, coach Courtnie Egan welcomed a son on Aug. 12. Egan is on maternity, but she will be volunteering her time to coach. She will be aided John Jay-East Fishkill grad Jacqueline Deppe, daughter of JJEF coach Barb Deppe, and Bronxville JV coach Andy Liebman known as “Lieby to the players. … Former Somers standout and Pearl River head coach Melissa Heyde is the new Fox Lane varsity coach, replacing Heather Miller.
Based on what I know about the returning players for each team, here is my pre-season top five.
Class A
1. Mamaroneck – In Ellen Williams (back), Cathleen Smith (forward) and Charlotte Gardiner (midfield), the Tigers have three of Section 1’s finest players.
2. John Jay-East Fishkill

5. Carmel
Class B
1. Putnam Valley – In center midfielder Ashley Morgan, Putnam Valley possesses Section 1’s finest all-around player and difference-maker.

Now that I have gone out on a limb, I intend to be incognito at games this year through the use of a wig or hat or dark sunglasses or all of the above.
I just received an email from the Manhattanville SID office stating that former Rye coach Kevin Kelly has been named the new Manhattanville field hockey coach.
Hudson Valley scholastic field hockey coach Sharon Sarsen and assistant Sara Gonzalez selected the 2008 team that will be out to defend the program’s gold-medal run in Binghamton in July.

I was told Friday night, by my boss, that someone called to let us know that Kevin Kelly had been dismissed as Rye’s varsity field hockey coach. I thought it was a cruel joke someone was playing on us.
When I called the individual who alerted us, this person said it was true. I still could not believe it, but Rye AD Rob Castagna verified it.
So, how do you fire a man who has 391 career wins and led the program to four state championships, incling the 2007 state crown by ending two-time state titlist Garden City’s 62-game winning streak? I wish somone would go on the record and answer this.
And, according to math rules, four is greater than two. Or, in other words, the field hockey’s four state titles is two more than the Rye football team’s two state championships.
Hopefully, this week, I can get some answers. Stay tuned.
As I was leaving Cicero-North Syracuse High School today it hit me, the scholastic field hockey season is over. In one respect, I can’t wait to leave Syracuse (especially when it snows or is bitterly cold) so I can return home to my family. On the other hand though, it also represents the season’s conclusion.
And what a great 2007 season it was in Section 1, thanks to the players and coaches. We witnessed some outstanding field hockey games this season, for example, Rye-Putnam Valley (three times), Lakeland-Rye, Lakeland-Putnam Valley, Mamaroneck-Lakeland, Suffern-North Rockland (twice), Putnam Valley-Somers (sectional semifinal), Brewster-Somers (twice), Pleasantville-Bronxville (Sectional final) and, of course, the Garden City-Rye state championship game won by the Garnets on Olivia Nabhan’s goal in the second sudden-death overtime. These are just a few of the games I can recall. There were many more I’m sure I missed.
This season also witnessed a few first-year coaches guiding their respective teams to sectionals—Lindsay Robinson at Edgemont and Cheryl Eglin at Nyack, who only had 12 players.
We witnessed the end of an era at Pleasantville as 31-year coach and an all-around outstanding person in Rosemary Sotherden retired after her team’s regional final. I said it before and I will say it again, thank you coach Sotherden for everything you did for Pleasantville field hockey, Section 1 field hockey and Hudson Valley field hockey.
Let me take this opportunity to thank the players, coaches and parents for your tremendous cooperation this season. From the players, who had to deal with lengthy interviews following a game or long day of school and practice, to the coaches for always helping me with numbers and speaking glowlingly of their players, to the parents, who also helped me out with numbers or tracked their daughters down and had them call me. Many times I had players, coaches and parents thank me, however, I had the easy job. All I had to do was write about this outstanding game and players. The players and coaches did all of the work.
To the players, coaches and parents, congratulations again on another memorable season. Thank you for allowing me to enjoy it.
And good luck to the Hudson Valley scholastic field hockey team at Festival this week.
Williamsville scored on two penalty corners and held off Lakeland’s vaunted penalty-corner offense for a 2-1 victort in the Class A state final.
Leslie Ahern scored on a penalty corner at the 8:18 mark, giving the undefeated Sparatans a 2-0 lead. Lakeland had 10 second-half penalty corners, but only had four shots.
Megan Bozek scored for Lakeland with 1:33 remaining in the game.
Congratulations to Lakeland on a great season as it finished 22-2. And congratulations to the five senior captains – Caitlin Collins, Leah DiSisto, Tara McGovern, Cassie O’Mara and Chelsea Robinson, who had great years and great careers. Lakeland does not play for a state title this season without these five outstanding players.
Emily O’Gorman goal on a penalty corner at the 9:06 mark. To this point W. North has 5 corners to none for Lakeland. The Hornets did not have shot on goal.
Lakeland’s best scoring chance came with Chelsea Robinson and Alyssa Conklin coming into the circle, but Robinson’s pass was just out of Conklin’s reach.
Second-half goals by Caitlin Collins and Cassie O’Mara lifted Lakeland to a 2-0 victory over Saratoga in the Class A semifinal.
Lakeland will play Williamsville North (Section 6), who beat Ward Melville, 3-0, Sunday at 10 a.m. Lakeland beat Williamsville North in the 2003 Class A final. Danielle Fiore had both goals in that game.
Caitlin Collins, Cassie O’Mara, Tara McGovern and Leah DiSisto are very familiar with Williamsville North’s best player—Chantae Miller. Miller was a starter on the Spartans’ 2003 team and has been a mainstay on Western’s scholastic women’s field hockey team at the Empire State Games. Hudson Valley, which included Collins, O’Mara, McGovern and DiSisto, defeated Wesern, 1-0 in the 2007 scholastic women’s gold-medal game.
