Mamaroneck shocked by Arlington

When Mamaroneck coach John Savage called in his game with Arlington game and told me the final score – 2-0 Arlington – I was quite surprised. I thought he was pulling my leg. However, Savage was telling the truth. He noted that Arlington had three years of frustration for it was the Tigers who elimiated the Admirals in the past three sectional tournaments.
Arlington scored a pair of first-half goals to hand Mamaroneck its first loss of the season and first regular-season loss to a Section 1 team since 2003. (I will have to check with John about this.) I know Mamaroneck was unbeaten these last three years, including the 2004 state-title team, 2005 state finalist and last year’s sectional finalist.
Savage did not make any excuses. He commended Arlington, which is now 8-0, for playing a very good game. Besides the loss, the one stat Savage did point out was Mamaroneck’s penalty-corner advantage – 12-2. It’s not often a Mamaroneck team gets 12 corners and does not capitalize on at least one.
Mamaroneck will rebound from this and Savage, along with assistant coach Tricia Miller, will have the team ready for the postseason.
The surprising loss could mean that Mamaroneck will end up with the third seed behind Lakeland and Arlington. Although, Arlington still has to play John Jay-East Fishkill, which lost to Lakeland, 2-1 in early September.
