Here is what everyone has been waiting for, the Section 1 seeds for Class A and Class B. Remember, the Class C seeding meeting will be held Thursday.
Thursday, Oct. 25
Class A
First round
No. 1 Lakeland (17-1) bye
No. 9 Scarsdale (8-7-2) at No. 8 Suffern (10-5-3), 4:30 p.m.
No. 12 Horace Greeley (4-7-5) at No. 5 John Jay-East Fishkill (9-2-5), 2:30 p.m.
No. 4 North Rockland (13-4) bye
No. 3. Mamaroneck (13-2-2) bye
No. 11 Yorktown (5-8-5) at No. 6 Ossining (12-4-2), 3 p.m.
No. 10 Carmel (6-6-5) at No. 7 John Jay (9-2-5), 4:30 p.m.
No. 2 Arlington (13-2-1) bye
I see a Lakeland-John Jay-East Fishkill semifinal and a Mamaroneck-Arlington semifinal. Mamaroneck and Arlington have met in the semis the past three years with Mamaroneck prevailing each time.
Class B
First round
No. 1 Rye (15-2) bye
No. 9 Nyack (7-7-3) at No. 8 Sleepy Hollow (6-4-5), 2:30 p.m.
No. 5 Pelham (11-2-2) bye
No. 4 Briarcliff (13-3-2) bye
No. 3 Putnam Valley (14-3) bye
No. 11 Panas (8-9) at No. Brewster (12-3-1), 2:30 p.m.
No. 10 Edgemont (6-6-4) at No. 7 Dover (6-4-4), 2:30 p.m.
No. 2 Somers (14-1-3) bye
One semi will pit Rye against Briarcliff with the other semi having Putnam Valley playing Somers.
Even though Somers, Brewster, Nyack and Panas played Class A schedules during the regular season, they dropped to Class B for sectionals because of their enrollment numbers.
Congratulations to Nyack and coach Cheryl Eglin and Edgemont and first-year coach and former Lakeland standout Lindsay Robinson for qualifying. After losing an excellent senior class, the first-year coach, who only has 12 players, guided Nyack back to sectionals.
In Class A, Yorktown needed to win its last two regular-season games to qualify and the ‘Huskers did just that for coach Becky Melikian.
The interesting aspect of Class A is that both John Jays have 9-2-5 records, yet East Fishkill drew the fifth seed and Cross River was the seventh seed, with Ossining at 12-4-2 seeded sixth. My guess is that JJEF has the strength of schedule advantage over Ossining. Well, it appears JJEF and Lakeland will have yet another semifinal encounter.

Just curious about something here about all this and maybe some here will know the answer. Is it normal for a team just before sectionals pull kids up from JV to play Varisty? Watched a game with grand daughter and saw new players that weren’t on the team before-played them only a week before and these kids weren’t there-they’ve added to their bench quite a bit. We’ll see how that strategy plays out for one of these teams during sectionals.
Tony- John Jay East Fishkill is 11-3-4. Possibly plays the toughest schedule in Section 1: Lakeland L2-1;Mamaroneck T0-0;Rye L2-0; Put.Valley L4-2; Arlington T1-1,W2-0;Bronxville W2-1; Rondout Valley(Section 9 power) T1-1. We don’t have turf so we play most of our non-league schedule on the road. Thanks for the little coverage that you do give us. The Poughkeepsie journal and Local Cable News in Dutchess Co. care only about football and soccer. Thanks again.
Tony: In B, wouldn’t Rye first have to play a quarterfinal match with the 8-9 winner, with Briarcliff and Pelham playing, with the Rye/8-9 winner then playing the Briarcliff/Pelham victor in the semis? Same thing in the lower B bracket, I believe Putnam would first have to play the winner of the Panas/N. Brewster game and Somers first playing the winner of the Edgemont/Dover game before Putnam and Somers would possibly meet in the semis. Or am I wrong.
Fantoo –
I don’t see Rye, Somers or Putnam Valley being upset in the quarters. If one of these three is, I’m calling the FBI.
gotcha. I misread your blog.
Tony: you’d better get the FBI phone number out. Brewster’s gonna win against Putnam Valley in the quarters! Brewster’s an offensive powerhouse this season.
Just curious, don’t you think they(Brewster) would be more effective if they put in their 2xgold medal winner and future Division 1 player instead of sitting her on the bench? Coach needs to rethink her lineup if she wants to go any further than Panas…
BrewstrFan –
Brewster has had an excellent year and has been strong offensively, however, it will be challenged by a Putnam Valley defense that limited Rye to one goal (scored with 3 minutes left in the game) and held Mamaroneck scoreless.
Putnam Valley’s defense, led by the superb Brittany Kinsley, along with Kristin Brown, Sara Kastuk and Nicole Scott has been outstanding.
Just an onlooker –
That is a question you need to ask coach Fitzgerald. Brewster has been successful this season, and I would think that Caitlin Conn provides a spark when she is inserted into the game. Again though, your question should be brought up to coach Fitzgerald.
Regardless of what’s going on with the team right now, congrats to C. Conn! Where will she be playing next year?
Brewster Does have a strong offense Led by leading scorers on team, Gabby Fallon (17), Samantha Blackwell, Erin Taylor &Danielle Yarusso and no doubt their goalie Kasey Amendola is ready for the tough job of defending against Putnam Valley. They definitely will have to bring their best game on the field.
Should make for some great field hockey
Sec1Fan: thanks for asking. Caitlin Conn has committed to Brown University and looks forward to seeing former Empire State Games teammates in League play (K.J. Warren, Mamaroneck/Harvard; Claire Byrnes, Rye/Dartmouth).
From watching PV play all season, here’s my two cents: if Brewster brings their A game and provides shadow coverage on Ashley Morgan (she has a tendency to break through single coverage with speed so her coverage will need to be supported by a recovery player if the first cover gets beat) in the offensive zone and covers Kinsley in the midfield (so she can’t generate offense) as well as in their defensive zone(so she can’t swoop in and shoot down oncoming offensive rushes by Brewster), then Brewster has a shot. The rest of the team, player for player, is manageable. So, good luck and hopefully the Brewster coach will get her best players on the field.
Brewster won today against Panas on two nice goals by Sam Blackwell. Should be a good game at Putnam Valley on Saturday!
Brewster came out flat..can’t play that way on Saturday. Saw some of the Put Valley team scouting out the competition, Was nice to C. Conn play. Team is going to need to be in their faces and try to rattle their GK
Where you going Saturday?

The answer is yes teams will pull up JV players as long as the JV season is over. It gives the girls insight how the varsity level is different and acknowledges them for their play throughout the season.
