Four games were played Saturday while the other three were postponed until Monday. Let;s take a look at the four results:
Class B
No. 3 Putnam Valley 6, No. 6 Brewster 0: The Tigers jumped on the Bears early and often, scoring three goals in the first 11:08, and were never in danger. Megan Warning had a hand in these three goals, assisting on Katie Mazin’s opening goal at 3:48. Warning, assisted by Erica Fisher, doubled the lead at 8:30, and then added her second goal at the 11:08 mark. While Brittany Kinsley and Ashley Morgan are known throughout Section 1 as two of the finest at their respective positions, Warning has quietly had an outstanding season. Warning leads Putnam Valley with 20 goals. Putnam Valley will play the winner of No. 7 Dover-No. 2 Somers (this quarter will be Monday at 2:30 p.m.) in a semifinal Wednesday.
No. 1 Rye 3, No. 8 Sleepy Hollow 0: Liz Chabot scored with seven minutes remaining in the first half, then added a second goal two minutes later. Marielle Bianchi added a second-half tally. Sleepy Hollow goalie Emily MacDonald made 19 saves. Rye will host Kelly Adams and her fourth-seeded Briarcliff team in a semi Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Class A
No. 1 Lakeland 2, No. 8 Suffern 0: If I told you that neither Chelsea Robinson, Caitlin Collins or Cassie O’Mara scored would you believe that Lakeland won? Hard to imagine, but Gillian Murdock scored a first-half goal and Megan Bozel added a second-half tally. Lakeland will host the winner of No. 5 John Jay-East Fishkill-No. 4 North Rockland (this quarter is Monday at 3 p.m.) in a semi Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
No. 3 Mamaroneck 2, No. 11 Yorktown: Mamaroneck christened Holy Child’s week-old new turf field with a victory as Anna Reddicliffe assisted on Joanna Lyons’ second-half goal then Reddicliffe added an insurance goal. Mamaroneck will play the winner of No. 10 Carmel-No. 2 Arlington (this quarter is Monday at 4:15 p.m.) in a semi on Wednesday.

The Lakeland vs. suffern game was one of the best i believe suffern played all season. The newspaper said that Lakeland cruised to victory… it was nowhere near a cruise. Suffern fought tooth and nail and deserves much more credit for an amazing “underdog” season. For a team that was 4-8-4 last year playing a 2-0 game against a team who were state champions last year is quite a feat. I believe alot more credit is due to a team who had such will and strength.
I have to agree with FHgirl! The game that we saw on Saturday night was one of skill and determination! The teams played hard and both deserve to have more than that written about them!
Here is what a parent has written to the editor about that write up…
Judging by the inaccurate headline and three sentence summary of the Lakeland vs Suffern field hockey sectional game played Saturday night, no one from the Journal News sports department attended. What a shame. Far from “sailing”, defending state champ and No. 1 seed Lakeland engaged in a hard-fought defensive battle with No. 8 seed Suffern. Lakeland led 1-0 at halftime and late in the game scored a second goal to secure victory. Tenacious play on both sides of the ball made it a close, exciting game. Your account does a disservice to the wonderful female athletes on both teams who advanced to post season play.
Not to take anything from Suffern, because they definitely deserve congratulations for holding off Lakeland (particularly due to the strength of the play of the Suffern goalie), but let’s be clear on something—Lakeland outshot Suffern 22-3 (check the stats on maxpreps). No matter what it says on the scoreboard, there should be no illusions that this was a “close” game. It also sounds like Lakeland was not playing at the top of their game that day, but in either case, like many games this season, it comes down to goaltending and who’s “hot” that day. For example, in the Brewster-PV game, PV won 6-0. Meanwhile, that was only on 12 shots. That’s why you really need to look at over-all stats. So look at Lakeland outshooting Suffern 22-3 and ending up with a score of only 2-0 versus PV outshooting Brewster 12-2 but ending up with a score of 6-0. So, yeah, can’t go by scoreboard to assess how evenly matched a game was. The seeming “rout” of Brewster was far less of a slaughter than the Lakelend-Suffern game, despite what the score board said in each game. And at the end of the day, it only really matters who won, anyway, so this is all just mental gymnastics. So Suffern should be thanking their goaltender for keeping them in the game. And for the 22 shots that got through to the Suffern GK, I assume the defense had their hands full in preventing it from being 50+ shots. So, kudos to them as well. And, no, I am not from Lakeland.
Lakeland is not the same team it was last year they lost many key starters and are still doing great as with PV. Can anyone answer how an assist is tallied I was confused with the artical on PV vs Brewster if the goalie had a save and another player rebounded the shot in how does that counts for an assist?
Tony,
Not to take away from Somer and congrats on the league title, but again they are seeded above PV when they played a weeker schedule. It hasn’t mattered in the past PV has won though in terms of a home game its always nice to play at home and fan turnout is generally better. Strength of shedule should count.
Yo Tony, it’s now Tuesday and additional sectional games were played yesterday—what gives??
JJ EF shuts down No Rockland, despite what I understand was some nasty & dirty play on the paret of No Rockland.
Arlington shuts out Carmel … no more magic Collette
sec1fan unless you were at that game i dont believe that any type of stats can illustrate it. The point of the matter is that it doesnt matter who on Suffern stopped those “50+ goals” that you think lakeland could have gotten. A team is a team. The goalkeeper is great but the entire game is not on her. Its an incredibly ignorant assumption that goalie, defense, midfield and fowards didnt all work their butts off in that game. Saying it was because the goalie was “hot” that day is just as degrading to Sufferns job. Shes an amazing goalkeeper but it wasnt some strike of luck that she stopped 20 goals. If you are from Lakeland or not it doesnt matter. A team plays as a team and discrediting suffern and the score of that game as lucky because without their goalies it would be 50-0 is incredibly rude and discrediting to the skill of that team.
I was not saying that Suffern didn’t work hard. I am sure they did. Everyone does in a playoff game. My response was to FHFan2’s statement that it was a “close” game. Playing wise, it wasn’t and my point is that the scoreboard is not always a reflection of what is happenning on the field. And you’re offended that I have “discredited” the skill of a team? 3 shots for and allowing 20 against speaks for itself. And coming from someone who has their basis of knowledge from watching a team that historically isn’t even competitive enough to make playoffs, do you think you are really educated enough about the game to call someone else’s opinions ignorant? Right. Blah, blah, blah…
In order to win any game you have to play both sides of the field.
“Blah, blah, blah…” you sound like an incredibly intelligent person. Be proud “Sec1Fan” you can talk like a 13 year old. And oddly I do think that I might just be educated enough to call someone ignorant. Especially if that someone is assuming that I do not know a substancial amount about field hockey. Just try to remember later in life that when you assume you just make an ass out of yourself.
Oh, the irony of someone touting how educated they are who then writes that something is “substancial.” Proper spelling can be your friend. Time to move on.
