Class A and B semis results

Okay. Let’s start with the most controversial game of the day, No. 3 Mamaroneck at No. 2 Arlington.
Mamaroneck prevailed, 2-1 as Joanna Lyons scored on a second-half penalty corner. Now, I watched the video of the penalty corner on YouTube and it appears that the ball went in off of Lyons’ shin. You can see that the Alrington girls immediately ran over to the official to contest the goal.
Now, my question is this, Can anyone who was in attendence at this game today actually give us an unbiased opinion? I understand the Arlington fans will say the goal should have been disallowed, which is understandable. And I am sure the Mamaroneck parents will say that the goal should have counted. So, I’m in search of one unbiased individual concerning this.
No. 1 Lakeland 4, No. 5 John Jay-East Fishkill 0: This result goes to show you what I know. I honestly thought this game would come down to strokes. So, superb center mid Caitlin Collins scores twice and Chelsea Robinson and Megan Bozek also scored. Lakeland will now host No. 2 Mamaroneck in the Class A title game 5 p.m. Saturday at Lakeland. This will mark the third time in the last four years that the teams will play in the final. Mamaroneck won the 2004 title game and Lakeland rebounded to win last year.
Class B
No. 3 Putnam Valley 2, No. 2 Somers 1: Putnam Valley junior Megan Warning continued her scoring binge, netting Put Valley’s goals in the first half. Caitlin Ward scored for Somers. Putnam Valley will play top-seeded Rye in the Class B final Saturday, 3 p.m. at Lakeland. This marks the fifth consecutive year the teams will play for the title.
Despite the loss, congratulations to Somers’ coach Leigh Fiorito and her team, especially Lizzy Russo and Amanda Heyde, for an outstanding season.
No. 1 Rye 6, No. 4 Briarcliff 0: Alyssa Coughlan and Marielle Bianchi had two goals apiece and Lucy Rollins collected three assists as the Garnets’ experience won out.
A shout out goes to Briarcliff and coach Kelly Adams, who played four freshmen in prominent roles this season and yet the Bears still collected 14 wins and advanced to the sectional semifinals.

Lucy Rollins for president!!!!
Great game vs Briarcliff
As a field hockey fan from Rockland, I can give an unbiased opinion. It is clear that the goal should not have counted and that the refs must have missed the kick, but it happened. The game has ended and there is really nothing that anyone can do about it now. It is hard for the Arlington team to have to end their season that way, but ‘you win some you lose some’. Its just tough that it had to be during a section semi-final game. They were both great teams.
RocklandFH is correct. As an unbiased person:I’ve seen it happen before where a call from an official has clearly been wrong and it was caught on tape, but nothing can be done after the fact. The only thing that the coach could have done is file the protest papers that are in the Sectional packet, but it’s so hard to prove that this call was made incorrectly. It’s horrible that the call cost a game and worse that it was during sectional playoffs. Great season by both teams! Good luck to Mamaroneck, and Lakeland. It should be a great game! Good seasons JJEF and Arlington! You gave it your all and should be proud of the teams too!!
The same thing happened last year between PV and Rye in the sectional finals and resulted in a 1-0 loss for PV tough way to go and that was also on tape. If you remember in the Basketball sectionals at the county center Lakeland vs Peekskill there was a mistake on the referees part. It happens all to often in these games. Whats the answer?
How did both officials miss this?
Where on YouTube can we view the video of the Lyons goal on the penalty corner from the Mamaroneck/Arlington semi.
Where on YouTube is this play?
The officiating at the JJ vs Lakeland was sub-par to say the least. Although it wouldn’t have directly changed the the final outcome, two blown calls by the same official took what was a 1-0 exciting game with a lot of intensity, and turned it into 3-0, and Jay’s young forwards couldn’t muster any kind off attack against a talented Lakeland squad. Bad enough that Barb Deppe had a discussion with him at halftime.
Where’s the thin woman with short blonde hair who does the Brewster winter league and the PV summer league? She’s the best around. Maybe she can train some of the ref.’s. The guy at Lakeland yesterday should be working at the modified level. No offense. Hat’s off to Lakeland and Mamaroneck..Hopefully one will go the distance.
Thank you for adding the YouTube clip.
How did the officials miss this? How many times is there a scramble in front of the goal with 10+ people and you don’t know who scored? Even on the open field they miss a kick, its easy to get screened. Even the best officials are only human and that leaves room for error. How do you fix it
Tony,
From the look of things the goal should not have been counted. So whats the answer? Thats life can’t take it back just like PV last year you have to move on. If they would have scored or won it would be a non-issue
Right, it is part of life.
We did get a laugh at the All-Section dinner when the announcer accidentally announced PV as the winner of Class B. we chuckled as we asked if they had viewed the video.
Lakeland JJ game was awesome. I agree the the ref was not good.Although JJ was very physical. Lakeland dominated the rest of the game. Unfortunately good refs are hard to come by. JJ thanks for a great game.
Tony, as we all know, bad/missed calls happen throughout many games but most don’t have the consequence of a win or a loss. I applaud both teams for playing very well, but unfortunately Wednesday night, a bad call did result in a loss for Arlington in their game against Mamaroneck in the Sectional semi-finals. Although, as a parent I am very disappointed for the Arlington girls who worked so hard all season I am more concerned with how the female official conducted herself after the game. As you can imagine, the players were extremely disappointed with the loss, emotions were high, and they questioned the valdity of the call. As an official, the expectation is you will conduct yourself as a professional and control the situation, not add to the chaos. After the game, most officials leave the field immediately to avoid any issues, this official went to the Arlington bench for a confrontation because the players were expressing their concerns to their coach. We all have to accept responsibility for our actions, if she can’t take the heat then she should get out of the kitchen. She is supposed to be setting an example, not engaging in the aftermath.
As the person who posted the video link I wanted to add a little history that these two teams have to explain why the Arlington team and fans are so frustrated.
Before I do let me say I agree with everyone that all we can do is move on.
Two seasons ago when these teams meet in the reg season the score was 1-1 when Arlington scored the go ahead goal. The ref closest to the benches then had his ear caught by the Mamaroneck coach. And 2 min later he waved off the goal. As a coach myself I have never seen a coach be able to talk a ref out of goal and this after both had said it was a goal. I was upset at the time but also impressed.
The second game that season was sectional semi final game. There were two questionable calls in that game resulted in Mamaroneck goals and a 2-1 win. How do we know they were questionable?
Well the first call resulted in a stroke. The back ref tried to tell the ref making the call it was the wrong call that the goalie never stepped on the ball. But he would not listen to her. She also tried to tell him the second call was wrong to. He gave a corner when the ball hit a foot outside the circle. Again he did not listen to her. We had to live with the calls. But the salt on the wound was after the game. The ref who made those calls came over to the Arlington bench and told the girls he was sorry, that he cost them the game with his bad calls and that they should have won because they were the better team that day. We could not believe that he did that and said that.
Many of the girls on that team this year were on that team 2 years ago. That is why the frustration on the part of Arlington players and fans.
Arlington feels like Charlie Brown when they play Mamaroneck and the refs (Lucy) pull the football away when they run up to kick it.
Let me close with this. Mamaroneck has a great program and the Arlington team always looks forward to playing them. And we look forward to playing them again next year.
Now it’s off to the finals.. good luck to both Lakeland and Mamaroneck. Should be a good game.
Hi,
I’m the Arlington parent that shot the video. Bottom line is, I had a clear view of the play. The refs didn’t. When I coach ice hockey, I tell the kids to get lots of traffic in front of the net. A goalie can’t save we she can’t see. Likewise a ref can’t call what he/she can’t see. Its the human element of sport, good or bad. If we had just about any other goalie that game would have been decided cleanly on that very same play. Best penalty corner play I’ve ever seen. As a coworker of mine used to say. “That’s the way the mop flops”. Although they had good reason to be upset, many of our girls were out trick or treating that night. They are a resiliant bunch. We should learn from them! Good luck next year Admirals
Hello everyone.
Last night when I returned home from a trip I wrote an append to the blog. I don’t know what I was thinking when I wrote that append. I have been thinking about it and there are there are a few things I need to say.
First I owe a very big apology to all the officials who have read my comment and to those that have not. My attempt at being humorous in my last append was out of line, unprofessional, insensitive and uncalled for. Please accept my sincere apology for making such a comment. I truly do have a tremendous amount of respect for all the officials and the job they do on and off the field. I have asked Tony to delete my append from his blog as it has no place being in here.
To the officials who did the Arlington game. I apologize for putting the link to Utube out in this blog. That was not a fair thing to do. I have been at other games you have been the officials at, both Arlington games and those of other schools. You have always been professional in your actions on and off the field.
To the Mamaroneck coaches and team. You won a hard fought game. Arlington had plenty of time on the clock to come back and tie the game. But you played a great game and were able to hold them off the score board. By placing the link to the video out in the blog I might have diminished the effort you put forth in winning the game. That was not my intent. Also my comments about past seasons were unnecessary. Please accept my apology.
To the Arlington coaches and team. By placing the link out here I might have also diminished the effort you put forth. You played a wonderful game and I do not want to diminish that at all. My apologies if I did.
