Class A and B seeds for sectionals

October
23

Here is what everyone has been waiting for, the Section 1 seeds for Class A and Class B. Remember, the Class C seeding meeting will be held Thursday.

Thursday, Oct. 25
Class A
First round

No. 1 Lakeland (17-1) bye
No. 9 Scarsdale (8-7-2) at No. 8 Suffern (10-5-3), 4:30 p.m.
No. 12 Horace Greeley (4-7-5) at No. 5 John Jay-East Fishkill (9-2-5), 2:30 p.m.
No. 4 North Rockland (13-4) bye

No. 3. Mamaroneck (13-2-2) bye
No. 11 Yorktown (5-8-5) at No. 6 Ossining (12-4-2), 3 p.m.
No. 10 Carmel (6-6-5) at No. 7 John Jay (9-2-5), 4:30 p.m.
No. 2 Arlington (13-2-1) bye

I see a Lakeland-John Jay-East Fishkill semifinal and a Mamaroneck-Arlington semifinal. Mamaroneck and Arlington have met in the semis the past three years with Mamaroneck prevailing each time.

Class B
First round

No. 1 Rye (15-2) bye
No. 9 Nyack (7-7-3) at No. 8 Sleepy Hollow (6-4-5), 2:30 p.m.
No. 5 Pelham (11-2-2) bye
No. 4 Briarcliff (13-3-2) bye

No. 3 Putnam Valley (14-3) bye
No. 11 Panas (8-9) at No. Brewster (12-3-1), 2:30 p.m.
No. 10 Edgemont (6-6-4) at No. 7 Dover (6-4-4), 2:30 p.m.
No. 2 Somers (14-1-3) bye

One semi will pit Rye against Briarcliff with the other semi having Putnam Valley playing Somers.
Even though Somers, Brewster, Nyack and Panas played Class A schedules during the regular season, they dropped to Class B for sectionals because of their enrollment numbers.

Congratulations to Nyack and coach Cheryl Eglin and Edgemont and first-year coach and former Lakeland standout Lindsay Robinson for qualifying. After losing an excellent senior class, the first-year coach, who only has 12 players, guided Nyack back to sectionals.

In Class A, Yorktown needed to win its last two regular-season games to qualify and the ‘Huskers did just that for coach Becky Melikian.

The interesting aspect of Class A is that both John Jays have 9-2-5 records, yet East Fishkill drew the fifth seed and Cross River was the seventh seed, with Ossining at 12-4-2 seeded sixth. My guess is that JJEF has the strength of schedule advantage over Ossining. Well, it appears JJEF and Lakeland will have yet another semifinal encounter.

Another possible Class A seed breakdown

October
23

After discussing records for Class A teams with a respected Class A coach last night, and allowing the coach to be the mathematician (to convert winning percentages), here is a possible breakdown of the seeds:

1. Lakeland (17-1)
2. Either Arlington (13-1-2) or Mamaroneck (13-1-2). The Tigers play Putnam Valley today and a victory might bump Mamaroneck over Arlington.
3. Either Arlington or Mamaroneck
4. North Rockland (13-4)
5. John Jay-East Fishkill (10-3-3)
6. John Jay-Cross River (9-2-5)
7. Ossining (11-4-2)
8. Suffern (10-5-3)

This is all still speculation. It will be finalized tonight.

However, the semis appear to be John Jay-EF at Lakeland and Mamaroneck vs. Arlington.

Mamaroneck at Putnam Valley on Tuesday

October
22

What a great game to close out the regular season as Class A power, Mamaroneck, matches up with Class B force, Putnam Valley, at 4:30 p.m.

Mamaroneck was the 2004 state Class A champion while Putnam Valley took the 2005 state Class B crown.

Some of Section 1’s finest will again be on display beginning with Putnam Valley’s Brittany Kinsley, Ashley Morgan and Nicole Scott. Mamaroneck counters with Cathleen Smith, Charlotte Gardiner and Ellen Williams. Both teams are solid defensively, with Putnam Valley led by Kinsley and Scott, and Mamaroneck is headlined by Williams.

Morgan is also one of the best all-around center midfielders in Section 1. Morgan, Kinsley and teammate Erica Fisher, along with Cathleen Smith played for the gold-medal winning Hudson Valley scholastic women’s field hockey team last summer.

I have the pleasure of covering this game and I am looking forward to it because it will be my first viewing of Mamaroneck this season.

Following the game, Mamaroneck coach John Savage is off to the Section 1 seeding meeting.

Possible Class A sectional seeds

October
20

Before I speculate, let me say that The Voice, referring to me as a ‘genius’ on my Rye-Putnam Valley post leaves me wondering whether this young man and also a fine educator was in the right frame of mind.

Here is what I know with heading into the final week of the regular season:

Lakeland is 17-1 and I would think has sewed up the No. 1 seed. Now, here is where it gets interesting. The Poughkeepsie Journal supplied me with the Arlington (12-1-3) and John Jay-East Fishkill (9-2-3) records. Now, I was told by a very reliable source that Arlington lost to Pine Plains, however, that loss does not appear on its record. So, if the 12-1-3 Arlington record is correct, then the second seed will either go to Arlington or Mamaroneck (12-1-2). Mamaroneck is scheduled to play Putnam Valley on Tuesday (I will be covering this game). A Mamaroneck loss would seal the second seed for Arlington. A victory would probably give Mamaroneck the second seed because it has a better record, thus pushing Arlington to third.

The fourth seed would probably be John Jay-East Fishkill followed by John Jay-Cross River (9-2-5) at five and North Rockland (12-4) seeded sixth, Ossining (10-4-2) seventh and Suffern (9-5-3) eighth. Also add in Scarsdale and Carmel, and possibly Horace Greeley for the 9-12 seeds.

But, don’t quote me on any of this. I will leave this up to the coaches Tuesday night at the sectional field hockey seeding meeting. I am never right. You can ask my wife.

Rye 1, Putnam Valley 0

October
18

Let me start by saying this was a great game, played with the intensity of a sectional final! (Should we be surprised when these two teams meet, considering they have played for the Class B title every year since 2003)

Alyssa Coughlan’s goal with 2:52 remaining in the game lifted Rye over Putnam Valley, 1-0.

Coughlan received a beautiful pass from Torie Stearns, evaded a defender and slipped a shot by Putnam Valley goalie Jackie Gallagher, who was coming out to stop Coughlan. Gallagher and Coughlan collided with Gallagher being attended to by the Rye trainer. Gallagher picked herself up and resumed playing.

In Rye’s 2-1 win over Putnam Valley earler this season, it was Coughlan who assisted on Stearns’ game-winner, which came with three minutes remaining in the game.

Rye caught a break with 11:51 left on the clock as Erica Fisher hit the post. Rye had lost some of its intensity during this stretch, but the close call rejuvenated Rye.

However, the story of this game was the play of Putnam Valley’s defense, spearheaded by Brittany Kinsley, Nicole Scott and center midfielder Ashley Morgan. This trio was outstanding in halting Rye and negating scoring opportunities. Gallagher also had a great game, halting nine shots in the first half and finishing with 15 for the game.

Kinsley, Scott and Morgan were all over the field. In fact, in the second half, Morgan was on fire in regards to stick-stopping Rye passes and free hits. This trio, along with Sara Kastuk, also negated eight Rye second-half penalty corners. In particular, Morgan, the fllier on Put Valley’s corner defense, was phenomenal.

As Alyssa Coughlan said to me, in an interview after the game, referring to Morgan’s speed, “She (Morgan) was out there all the time.”

I think it would be safe to say these teams will meet again—in sectionals.

Somers wins league title

October
18

Somers clinched a league title with a 2-0 victory over Our Lady of Lourdes Wednesday as Lizzy Russo and Caitlin Ward scored.

Following the victory, Somers’ coach Leigh Fiorito was treated to a victory “shower,” as the girls doused her with a bucket full of water, like the New York Giants used to do to former coach, Bill Parcells. (But the Giants always got Parcells with Gatorade.)

When I asked Fiorito who the culprit was, she quickly repsonded, “Lizzy Russo.” Yes, it was the captain who led the charge. Apparently, if Russo pleads innocence, Fiorito said she is going to the videotape because she tapes all of the games.

Somers is 13-1-2 on the season and will drop to Class B for sectionals where it is in line to earn a top-four seed, possibly even the second seed behind Rye.

Sharon Sarsen gets her 400th win.

October
17

First-half goals by Chelsea Robinson and Lorraine Campanaro gave Lakeland a 2-0 victory over John Jay today, but more importantly, it was Lakeland coach Sharon Sarsen’s 400th career win.

In her 26-year Lakeland career, Sarsen has 400 wins, 65 losses and 35 ties. Sarsen has guided Lakeland to eight sectional titles and six state finals, including three state championships. Sarsen is considered Section 1’s finest coach and is one of the best coaches in New York State. I don’t think anyone will argue this point with me.

Sarsen becomes the third field hockey coach in New York to reach the 400-win milestone. The next Section 1 coach on the list is Rye’s Kevin Kelly, who surpassed 300 wins two years ago. (I will have an updated number for Kelly following Thursday’s Put Valley-Rye game.)

Congratulations Sharon, or “Sars,” as everybody knows you.

Connecticut hosts Boston University, Wed., 10/17

October
16

A big shout out to North Salem coach Jen (Butch) Frohman. While taking her win over Dover Tuesday, she mentioned that her and JV coach and former North Salem great, Carly DiMartis, are making the trip to Storrs Wednesday for the 7 p.m. Boston University-Connecticut game.

These game features three of Section 1’s finest with Somers’ grad Sarah Shute and Putnam Valley alum Kim Kastuk starting at forward and goalie, respectively, for BU. Former Lakeland great and the Journal News 2006 fall athlete of the season, Melissa Gonzalez, is starting for UConn.

It’s too bad I have to work or I would have made the trip to Storrs myself. I could have hitched a ride with coaches Frohman and DiMartis, but they probably would have made me drive and buy them dinner at some exclusive restuarant. And, how would I explain to my wife that I wass driving to Storrs to watch a college field hockey game instead of enjoying a night home with her and our two beautiful children?

More on Tuesday’s games

October
16

Suffern 5, White Plains 0: Suffern continued its great play and extending its unbeaten streak to nine games (7-0-2). Senior forward Staci Faye had two goals and an assist and it could not have been more deserving.

I’ve seen Suffern play three times this season, and in each game Faye is hustling all the time, giving it 110 percent, and then some. She is either leading a rush or racing downfield with one of her fellow forwards Ann Marie Avile, Jenny Califano and Cara ‘Little Eich’ Eichenberger, when they are carrying the ball. And when Faye has been in the circle, the ball has either hopped over her stick or a shot sailed just wide or a defender gets a stick on Faye’s when she shoots. In other words, Faye has not been rewarded for all of the hard work she displays in each game, and I told this to Suffern coach Bernadette Gannon after the Suffern-White Plains game Monday. And Gannon agreed. Today, Faye received her just due. Great job Staci Faye.

Rye 2, Kennedy 1: Yes, you are seeing this correctly. Rye needed a Liz Chabot goal with four minutes remaining in the game to overturn Kennedy as Brianna Sergio made an astounding 44 saves, as reported by Kennedy coach Pat Hogan.

Putnam Valley 4, John Jay-East Fishkill 2: Center midfielder Ashley Morgan had two goals and an assist as the Tigers prepped for their Thursday game with Rye with a victory over the Class A power. I will be at the Rye-Putnam Valley game on Thursday. I can’t wait!

Bronxville 6, Croton-Harmon 1: The Broncos ran their unbeaten streak to 12 games as Jessica Murrer had a hat trick and Brooke Gogel added two goals.

Holy Child 5, Hackley 2: Paige LaBella and Charlotte Tiernery each scored twice in the Gryphons’ ninth win of the season. Hilary Becker scored Hackley’s goals.

Rye Country Day School 6, St. Luke’s 1: Samantha Toth and Lucy Braid scored two goals apiece in the Wildcats’ ninth win against just one loss. I think it would be safe to say that Holy Child and RCDS are on schedule to play for a second straight year in the New York State Independent Schools title game.

Nanuet 1, Irvington 0: Casey Quinn’s first goal of the season and eight Amanda Mathew saves gave Nanuet its second win of the season.

North Salem 1, Dover 0: Chrissy Schenkewitz scored two minutes into the game and Jesse Kilcullen made eight saves as the Tigers knocked off the Class B school.
