I was told Friday night, by my boss, that someone called to let us know that Kevin Kelly had been dismissed as Rye’s varsity field hockey coach. I thought it was a cruel joke someone was playing on us.
When I called the individual who alerted us, this person said it was true. I still could not believe it, but Rye AD Rob Castagna verified it.
So, how do you fire a man who has 391 career wins and led the program to four state championships, incling the 2007 state crown by ending two-time state titlist Garden City’s 62-game winning streak? I wish somone would go on the record and answer this.
And, according to math rules, four is greater than two. Or, in other words, the field hockey’s four state titles is two more than the Rye football team’s two state championships.
Hopefully, this week, I can get some answers. Stay tuned.

Who is pulling the strings here? Ed Shine or Rob Castagna?
More worried about their jobs than the students they are hired to oversee.
thank you to all those rye parents…..complaining,complaining,,,well are you happy now,too bad its the girls that will suffer…..guess mr.Shine is smiling now,he got his wish
Looks like it is Ed Shine pulling the puppet strings of Castagna. They should both be removed for their actions.
Why do the parents of this district allow this. They work for us (everyone)not just the special interest groups. (upset parents who’s daughter was cut)
So does anyone really know why he was dismissed from his field hockey coaching position?

We don’t know because not one person will go on the record with me as to what happened.
The real reason? Ask people such as the 3 or 4 parents who screamed bloody murder when their kids didn’t make varisty, or perhaps ask the team captain who, after she physically went after one of her team mates after a game, and the coach tried to bench her in the next game, her parents went on a rampage to get him fired. Obviously, her parents were scared her D-1 bound position would be jeopardized.
I would certainly hope that his dismissal is for a legit reason. The dismissal of a coach in this manner can be devastating to a program. There are very few coaches in our sport with this type of successful longevity. I personally work year round with my players to achieve the success that we have had. The committment to athlete’s nowadays is a must in order for them to get to play at the collegiate level. College coaches gravitate towards these successful programs and I can only hope that the Rye program maintains its strong tradition for the sake of these young ladies futures.
Pay close attention over the next week or so. More information about his dismissal should become available. Another press for his reinstatement is underway in the community.
Any new updates on the Kevin Kelly situation?
I happened to bump into Kevin Kelly today and the man looks great. He was my coach for 6 years- we were the start of his program and I’ve followed his success with pride. What a great guy and a GREAT coach. Tough – but winners have to be. If he made the call to bench a player than by gosh parents should respect that youngsters need discipline. Sitting on the bench for 30 minutes would have been a lesson for a lifetime- now unlearned. Look at the harm done to his career, and possibly reputation. (If this is really why he was fired…. I don’t believe the alcohol thing but I guess you never know). Bottom line- I know he already has a new position and this is another example of one door closing and another opening. It’s just too bad that it had to be on a controversial note. Best of luck to Coach Kelly- GO VALIENTS!
