Field hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley

Lakeland at Rye, Friday night lights!

October
2

If you are a field hockey fan and you are not doing anything tomorrow night, may I suggest you make the trip to Nugent Stadium on the Rye High School campus for what should be the best regular-season game when two-time reigning Class A champion Lakeland plays reigning Class B champion Rye at 7:15 p.m.

I think MSG should be at Rye, making this the game of the week for broadcast Sunday morning. Rye deserves this turf and the spotlight for this game, considering the field hockey team has won four state championships (2000, ‘01, ‘03. 07) this decade and was also a state runner-up (‘04).

On the other hand, Lakeland owns two state Class A titles this decade (2003, 06) and was the state runner-up last year.

This game could very well be a preview of the Class B championship game with Lakeland playing in Class B this year.

Lakeland and Rye feature some of the top Section 1 players with Lakeland having midfielder Megan Bozek, backs Jillian Caffrey and Bridget McGovern and goalie Liz Gonzalez. Rye counters with back/midfielder Courtney Burke, center mid Olivia Nabhan, high-scoring forward Torie Stearns and backs Julianna Kennedy and Mimi McCormick. Bozek, Caffrey, Gonzalez, Burke, Nabhan and Stearns were all members of the 2008 Hudson Valley scholastic women’s field hockey team which won an unprecedented fourth consecutive gold medal.

Keep an eye on Bozek vs. Burke and Nabhan, and McGovern and Caffrey on Stearns. This will be a great game. I can’t wait. I expect a full house at Nugent Stadium Friday.
