Rye 3, Lakeland 0, Final

Yes, that score is correct. Rye receieved a goal and an assist from Olivia Nabhan, and goals from Torie Stearns and Courtney Burke in the victory. Stearns scored 95 seconds into the game and Nabhan scored with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.
There was a hugh crowd at the game which included the Mamaroneck and Putnam Valley field hockey teams. The concrete bleachers at Rye’s Nugent Stadium were full which was great to see.
Both teams entered the game undefeated. Lakeland, now 10-1, had allowed one goal entering the game and Rye, 9-0, has not surrendered a goal. Rye’s defense of Courtney Burke, Julianna Kennedy, Mimi McCormick and Rachel Chin were unyielding. Every time Lakeland advanced into Rye territory, one of the foursome was there to thwart the rush. Olivia Nabhan was also instrumental in this defensive effort. Lakeland had five penalty corners, but failed to generate a sht on goal on its corners or in the game.
Emma Tucci got Rye started, racing down the right wing and then drilling a centering pass into the circle. Lakeland goalie Liz Gonzalez came out to stop a Casey MacGuire deflection attempt, but Stearns poked the rebound in.
Nabhan added the second goal with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. She carried into the circle, dodged a defender and flipped a shot in. Nabhan assisted on Burke’s second-half goal on a beautifully executed penalty corner. After Burke inserted the ball, MacGuire sent a pass to Nabhan, who fed Burke and she swept it in the goal.
Don’t be surprised if these teams meet again in the Section 1 Class B tournament. Should Rye close out the season undefeated, the Garnets will get the No. 1 seed with Lakeland and Putnam Valley seeded second and third, not necessarily in that order. Lakeland will host Putnam Valley, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
Final: Rye 3, Lakeland 0. Tony P. will be back with more info/thoughts after he files his game story. Update 2: It’s now 3-0 as Courtney Bourke scores for the Garnets. Update 1: Tony P. just phoned in to report Rye leads previously unbeaten Lakeland 2-0 at halftime. Torie Stearns scored 1:20 into the game. Olivia Nabhan followed with 11 minutes left in the first half.

Last sunday I went to see Manhattanville play Oneonta. It was an entertaining game. Former Rye coach Kelly watched the last 6 minutes of the game from the street after recieving a red card. With the game tied 1-1. Kelly’s team scores with 1 minute left in the game.He seems like a great coach, just got a little loud.Any thoughts from Rye?

We’re not here to discuss what Kevin Kelly did in his Manhattanville game.
We’re here to talk about Section 1 high school field hockey.
Thanks Tony – some need to learn from the past and not live in it !!! Thanks for keeping the focus on what is important – the girls !!!!
So Tony, the obvious question is who’s better Rye or Mamaroneck (and why dont these top schools, throw in Lakeland, play in each other inthe reg season as a non-league game). ?
i believe that lake land not only played great against that type of competition, but will come out ten times stronger.. come sectionals. good job rye !
Pugle1 –
I think Rye and Mamaroneck are both excellent teams. Regarding why they don’t play, that is a question you would have to ask the respective ADs.
Hi Tony! sorry, just a small modification just so some girls can receive additional credit – Annie VanWagenen played a stellar game for the majority of the 50 minutes as the right defender, and the cross during the first goal was driven by Casey MacGuire. but this was a wonderful game to watch, both teams played great, competitive field hockey and we all can’t wait until the girls get into playoff season! always a pleasure reading, tony!!!
For pugle1 the answer to your question about who is the better team and why don’t they play is this: Rye and Lakeland are now in the same Class – which is B and they did play as part of their regular season. Mamaroneck is in class A – due to the size of their school and have never played Rye in regular season play. Lakeland up until this year played in Class A and met Mamaroneck in play in the Sections every year. Rye and Mamo are both excellent teams with extremely talented girls that have an excellent chance at advancing well beyond the Sections this year. I think Lakeland lost the backbone of their team and will take time to rebuild. Rye’s coaches are new, but has girls that are motivated, talented and know what it takes to win. Mamo’s coaches are awesome and the girls are equally talented, and Lakeland/Sarsen will have to regroup and rebuild this year – like many sports teams, they have cycles of experienced and inexperienced players that need time to develop.
Rye and Mamaroneck were “cousins” for several years. They scrimmaged and practiced with one another. The coaches were good friends and Mamaroneck needed valuable “turf time” practices during sectionals. I witnessed several of these sessions through the years and neither team appeared that much better or worse than the other.
PS…Congrats to Rye on the great win Friday night…I know lots of your “older sisters” are very proud of you.
Lakeland played A the last few years do to class size (enrollment)and still played Rye and Put Valley and its always a great game Put Valley has played Lakeland and Mamaroneck and have Mamaroneck on the schedule again this year.
Good to see the interest that this game generated, not just among the bloggers but among field hockey fans. It was also great to see the interest from girls from other teams who came to watch (I saw Putnam Valley, Mamaroneck and Bronxville teams and there were probably some other girls as well). Thanks to Rye for hosting a big game under the lights.
Hey Fh Fan,
Lakeland is doing just fine this year. One loss is not really that bad. They had one loss last year and beat Mamaroneck in the Sec. Finals. Don’t you know when it comes to the sectionals it’s anyones game it doesn’t matter what happens all season. Lakeland is full of talent so don’t count them out.
Yes that one loss was to Rye last year and this year. It is anyone’s game at anytime. Can’t wait to see how Lakeland does against Mamaroneck – that team is on fire!!!
Actually I just checked the Mamo schedule – didn’t see a Lakeland game scheduled too bad would love to see it.
In answer to everyone’s question, Rye and Mamaroneck have played each other in the past but as scrimmages. We will be doing so again in Oct before the sectionals.
