Regional finals set

Here is the schedule for Saturday’s regional finals at Lakeland:
Class A - Mamaroneck will face Section 11 champ Ward Melville after a 3-1 win over East Meadow. The Ward Melville coaches were scouting Mamaroneck in the Section 1 final. Even before I saw the coaches, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that Ward Melville would meet Mamaroneck. Ward Melville is 19-1 on the season. The last time these teams met in the state playoffs, Mamaroneck prevailed 1-0 in a 2004 regional final at Putnam Valley HS as current Harvard sophomore K.J. Warren provided the goal on a penalty stroke. Mamaroneck captains Ellen Williams and Charlotte Gardiner told me, in a pre-season interview, that the Tigers beat Ward Melville on the Bermuda field hockey trip in August.
Class C - Bronxville will follow at 2 p.m. and play Port Jefferson, the Section 11 titlist, after its win over Friends Academy. Port Jefferson (9-10) upset top-seeded Pierson/Bridgehamton, 1-0 in the Section 11 Class C final.
Class B – Putnam Valley will close the day at 4 p.m. facing Garden City (Section 8, 17-0). SportsFan asked me about Garden City. The 2007 state Class B finalist is undefeated. A Garden City fan checks in once a week, obviously keeping tabs on Rye. I’m sure Garden City is disappointed it won’t face Rye and have an opportunity to exact revenge for last year’s double overtime 1-0 loss in the state final on Olivia Nabhan’s goal. Garden City will probably look past Putnam Valley, thinking it has an easy game now. If the Section 8 champion does this I think it will be a major mistake.

thanks Tony
Hello Tony,
Both Smithtown East and Ward Melville are section 11 teams.
I went looking to see if I could find who the section 8 champ was but could not find it via google. Does section 8 have a champ? Or do they just mix all the teams together (sec 8 & 11) and play one tournament for the LI championship and have no sectional title?
I did find this on Newsday’s site –
Smithtown East is set to face No. 1 Ward Melville at Patchogue-Medford on Monday for the Class A championship.
I checked the Ward Melville record and their one loss was to Smithtown East this season. (they split) Melville beating East early in the season 3-1 and then losing later 1-0. So this should be a really good game.
I’m sure the Mamaroneck coaches will be in attendance scouting.
Good Luck all section 1 teams!
Thank you FH fan9 for pointing out my error. After checking the notes I took, I was incorrect. Just give me a demerit.
Each class on the Island plays in their own respective Long Island title game. The winner of the Class A, Class B and Class C Lonjg Island finals will play Saturday at Lakeland against Mamaroneck, Bronxville and Putnam Valley.
Tony,
No demerits are warranted… you do such a great job on the blog.
I grew up on LI so that just caught my eye
Tony, checking in from GC. If any of the B’ville, PV or Tiger players/parents are coming down to do some scouting tomorrow, and are interested in attending a well-regarded University in a safe neighborhood that is close enough for their parents to come watch all their field hockey games, they should come a little early and tour the Adelphi University campus. They just reinstituted their FH program at the D2 level so there must be some money around, and their sparkling brand new turf field stadium is awesome. As for GC looking past PV, I don’t think so. Number 1, we have a very, very tough game tomorrow vs Shoreham Wading River, one that we’re definitely not looking past. PV may possibly face SWR next weekend. It was 0-0 halftime last year. And 2, my daughter facebooks with some of the FH girls up your way, and knew immediately when PV beat Rye and then Lakeland. With those two quality wins, no way GC takes Putnam Valley lightly, believe me.
stroked –
I’m sure Shoreham-Wading River is an excellent team, but the only way Garden City doesn’t win the game is if the game time or site has been changed and the Garden City AD was not notified.
update…
garden city won 3-1
it was a close game though
Tony
Great call on Garden City winning …....
Any feelings or predictions on the Saturday game
Garden City vs Putnam Valley ???
I was at the GC-SWR game (was there for the A game but figured that the Garden City game would be good hockey). To be honest, and to take nothing away from the Shoreham team, I would not call it a close game. SWR had some chances in the last 15 minutes after they put in a goal (and GC was up by 3), but to be honest, Garden City is outstanding this year. The girls all look like Division I athletes and play like them. GC carries about 30 kids on the roster, but only plays about 13 or 14 of them – all of whom could immediately step onto the field for almost any college team. Frankly, the few kids they play are all they need to get the job done decisively. Their passes are crisp and powerful, they always know where each other are on the field, and they shoot like life depends on it. If you give them any loose ball in the circle, expect a powerful shot or wrister immediately. And their corner plays are treacherous. I watched them play last year, too, and they are just as strong as they were despite some graduation losses. I would be shocked if they didn’t take the state championship. Sure, it’s high school hockey, and on any given day, who knows what can happen, but this team is really otustanding and I just don’t see anyone left in B with the man for man power to take them.
Next year, though, I predict with Lakeland’s young team working on a year of maturity under their belt, will definitely give them a run for their money.
I wouldn’t count this Put Valley squad out just yet my friend.
DON’T COUNT PUT VALLEY OUT !!!!
PV TEAM IS A VERY TALENTED ATHLETIC TEAM THAT HAS THE MAN TO MAN POWER…OR SHOULD WE SAY WOMAN TO WOMAN POWER….ALSO A TEAM WITH SPEED & SKILL …..
BEST OF LUCK ON SATURDAY …..TO ALL !!!!!
Saturday’s game will not be a close game at all. Garden City is going to destroy Putnam Valley
hockeyfan – lets hope your predictions are just as bad as Tony’s when he predicted Rye to be playing Garden City this weekend, “Look who’s here” GO TIGERS!!!! Also if GC is ranked #6 in the country and Mamaroneck ranked #2 and PV only lost to Mamaroneck 1-0…I believe the Tigers will do it! If they bring there game to the field like they played against Rye, GC don’t stand a chance. Go Girls!! Give it all you got. Your fans are behind you every step of the way. and PS…. hockeyfan – I think your just an angry old Lakeland fan.
