Overview
Last time they met: At Suffern on Sept. 24, Mamaroneck won 2-0. Hope Joyce and Kayla Robinson scored goals. Liza Stephanz made sevens saves for the Tigers and Kaila Cahoon made nine saves for the Mounties.
No. 1 Mamaroneck: In a game I covered earlier this season, Mamaroneck traveled to Scarsdale and trailed 1-0 in the first half. The Tigers responded with six unanswered goals, which says a lot about both their resiliency and their firepower. Coach John Savage’s squad returns players that were a part of the 2011 team that lost in the NYS Class A State final and they certainly won’t shy away from the big stage of this year’s postseason.
No. 2 Suffern: Suffern ran roughshod over many of its opponents this season, including completely decimating much of Conference 4’s League A by huge margins (it did have 2 scoreless ties with a strong Nyack side also). To get to the championship game, Coach Bernadette Gannon’s team beat two stout teams in No. 3 Scarsdale and No. 7 JJEF.
Players to watch: For Mamaroneck: Hannah Fitzgerald is as good as it get in Section 1 in terms of pure scorers. Considering the Tigers disciplined forwards and add Rachel Brissette to that mix and it’s clear that the group is a handful For Suffern: Kaila Cahoon has been superb in goal and Northeastern-bound Sarah Adler is excellent at maneuvering in the circle.
Prediction: Kudos to Suffern for a phenomenal season and they deserve recognition for seriously raising the level of play in the Rockland field hockey landscape. As far as this contest goes, most high school teams are fortunate to have one star player. The Tigers happen to have several. Mamaroneck 3-0
Next step: The winner will play Section 9’s Kingston Saturday at Lakeland high school at 2 p.m. in the first round of regionals.
