Here are some Section 1 field hockey historical notes that I wanted to share:
- From 1999 to present, at least 1 Section 1 team has been present in the field hockey state championships with the exception of 2008
- Six of the 20 players listed to last year’s All-tournament team were from Section 1. Gianna Bensaia and Brooke Bonfiglio are the only returning players from the list.
- 18 Section 1 players were named to the 2011 All-State list
- 28 Section 1 teams had a team GPA higher than 90
- Rye Neck’s Sharon Landau is the NYS career goals leader with 174. She also scored 53 goals during the 1985 season. Shannon Scavelli is 8th on the list with 135 and Melissa Gonzalez is 11th with 124.
- Putnam Valley’s Kimberly Katsuk had 63 career shutouts, a NYS record
- If it wins a 7th state title this year, Lakeland moves to second on the list of championships per school. Marathon has 8.
