It didn’t come easily.
Not at 1-0.
Blame Scarsdale goalie Leah Cannon for that.
Saturday night, Mamaroneck claimed its 11th straight league title, nipping Scarsdale 1-0.
Both teams are sectional-bound but the game was multi-layered in importance, stretching from something as simple as, it’s-a-significant-deal-to-be-league-champion, to seedings for sectional play.
Mamaroneck dominated most of the game. While Mamaroneck keeper Caroline Jensen had to turn away two shots, Cannon was peppered with 19.
Only one escaped her.
That second-half game-winner came off Lizzie Clarke’s stick with an assist from Karen Seid.
The win puts Mamaroneck, which plays Rye tonight (7 at Mamaroneck) at 14-0-1 and dropped Scarsdale to 13-2-0.
Both Scarsdale losses were to the Tigers.
The first game, back in September, was less of a game.
Scarsdale actually broke on top in the first half then on a Caroline Knapp goal. But the Tigers responded with four in the second half, Clarke and Seid accounting for two of them.
Scarsdale, which plays Horace Greeley this afternoon (4:15 at Scarsdale), has outscored opponents 87-11 this season and has been on the winning side of seven shutouts.
Mamaroneck has been even more impressive. It had shut out five straight opponents before Knapp’s goal last month and has only given up one other goal since then.
At the same time, it has scored 91.
Shutouts? How about 13?
It’s lone blemish (if it can be called that) was one of those shutouts—a 0-0 tie to Darien, a team powerhouse-Lakeland puts on its schedule (Lakeland suffered its lone loss last year to Darien but beat it this year) because it wants to be challenged by a super tough opponent.
The regular season comes to a close today and sectional seedings will be determined tomorrow (Tuesday). We will report who is ranked where but figure Mamaroneck and Scarsdale will be way, way up there.
