Class C semi-final results

October
30

No. 1 Bronxville 4, No. 4 Pawling o: Brooke Gogel had a hat trick and Alex Lynch added a goal and two assists as the Broncos return to the Section 1 Class C final. The Broncos (16-3) will play No. 7 North Salem (5-8-7) Saturday, 5 p.m at Lakeland.

No. 7 North Salem 1, No. 6 Rye Neck 0 (strokes): The Tigers advance to their first final since 2003, when, led by Jenn Howley and Jess Redzinski, they won the title and played for a state championship. North Salem did so by outscoring Rye Neck, 2-1 in strokes.

I covered this game and it was very entertaining for a scoreless game through regulation and two overtimes. Both goalies, North Salem’s Lizetta Solarik and Rye Neck’s Amy Carelli were outstanding. They were both aggressive in that they both came out of the net to make kick saves or clears. Solarik, along with her teammates, kept the game scoreless with a fine play in the waning seconds of regulation. Liz Tucci ripped a side-line free hit into the circle. Solarik dove to her right, and when she did, her teammates did the same in an effort to keep Rye Neck from scoring. The overtime periods produced a couple of penalty corners for each team before going to strokes.

North Salem’s Liz Raskopf and Megan Palotta converted on the Tigers’ first two shots before Carelli stopped two of the next three strokes, with one going wide. North Salem’s fifth attempt went wide. Solarik handled the first three Rye Neck corners, but Lizzy Wexler scored on the fourth stroke. Trailing 2-1, Rye Neck’s final stroke was right on but went over the net.

Congratulations to North Salem, coach Jen Frohman and assistant coach, and former North Salem great, Carly DeMartis for returning to a sectional final. From 1999-2001 North Salem and Bronxville played for the Section 1 Class D title with the Broncos winning all three. North Salem won the 2003 sectional Class C title, led by Jenn Howley and Jess Redzinski, and went on to play for a state championship.

Congratulations to the Rye Neck players and first-year coach Niki Berman, a former Lakeland all-state player, for a fine season. The players and Berman have revived a Rye Neck program that dominated Section 1 under legendary coach Gail Stevenson and then Barbara Lorys, a former Rye Neck great. The Panthers went 6-7-5 and reached the sectional semis for the first time in quite some time. More importantly though, Berman pointed out to me after the game that the players are excited, once again, about field hockey, which was one of her goals. Based on this season, Rye Neck is heading toward an upswing.

Friday Sectional scores

October
24

Freshman Sara Rattigan had her first varsity hat trick and Cristina Caso assisted on all of her goals as No. 5 Carmel defeated No. 12 Clarkstown South, 4-0 in a Class A first-round game. Carmel (9-3-7) will play at No. 4 John Jay-East Fishkill (11-4-4) in a quarterfinal Monday, 2:30 p.m. The teams played to a pair of 0-0 regular-season games. Clarkstown South, making its first sectional appearance in six years, according to coach Jordan Turner, finished 6-7-5.

Rattigan opened the scoring 4:39 into the game, using her speed to break away from the Clarkstown South defense and beat goalie Jenn Ortiz through the feet. Senior Aislinn Breslin doubled the lead to 2-0 11 minutes later, knocking in a Rattigan rebound.

Rattigan, who was seen making constant runs down right wing, dodging defenders and setting up scoring chances, completed her hat trick in the second half.

In other Class A games:

No. 3 Suffern 2, No. 14 Clarkstown North 1: Cara Eichenberger scored two second-half goals, including the game-winner with six minutes remaining in the game as the Mounties (11-4-3) overcame the upset bid. Suffern will host No. 6 Brewster (11-6-2) in a quarterfinal Monday, 4 p.m. Clarkstown North (6-7-3) grabbed a 1-0 lead b y virtue of Grace Lee’s goal in the first half. Even though the Rams lost, coach Danielle Trainor and her girls should be commended for having an excellent season, after not winning a game last season. C. North went 3-2-1 against Clarkstown South, North Rockland and Suffern.

No. 6 Brewster 2, No. 11 Horace Greeley 0: Erin Taylor scored a goal in each half and Michaela Spannaus and Jess Griesinger had assists. Goalie Kasey Amendola made four saves. Another nice win for a young Brewster team, under the guidance of first-year coach Corin Racicot, who had done an excellent job this season.

No. 4 John Jay-East Fishkill 2, No. 13 Scarsdale 0: Scarsdale coach Sharon Rosenthal said this game was scoreless with three minutes remaining, but the Patriots popped in two. Scarsdale (7-9-3) received seven saves from Emily Steinberg.

Thursday Sectional results

October
23

Here we go with today’s games. I was at the Mahopac (9th seed)-Ossining (8th seed) first-round Class A game won by the “O”, 4-2.

Ossining led 3-0 at halftime on goals by eighth-grader Molly Moran, her first varsity score, Kate Malone and Katie O’Hanlon. Mahopac closed to within 3-1 on Caitlin Baranowski’s goal four minutes into the second half, but O’Hanlon answered with her second of the game to restore a three-goal lead. Annie Carroll closed out the scoring.

Molly Malone jumped on a rebound (on Ossining’s first penalty corner of the game) and deposited the ball at the 8:21 mark. Kate Malone had the goal of the game, picking up a loose ball just outside the 25, breaking away from the Mahopac defense. Malone, angling left to right, came across the goalmouth and with Mahopac goalie Kellie McCormack diving, slipped the ball under her at the 21-minute mark. Kate Malone set up O’Hanlon’s goal with 41 seconds in the half, putting a centering pass on O’Hanlon’s stick and all she had to do was sweep it in.

Ossining’s (9-7-3) reward for winning is a quarterfinal game with top-seeded and undefeated Mamaroneck (18-0) Saturday, 2 p.m. at Flint Park in Larchmont on the turf field. Mahopac concludes with a 7-7-5 record.

In the other Class A game, No. 7 Arlington (8-6-3) defeated No. 10 Yorktown, 3-0. Arlington has earned a date at No. 2 Fox Lane (10-3-3) Saturday, 2 p.m.

Class B

Three games in Class B, all decided by one goal. The most exciting was No. 8 Our Lady of Lourdes clipping No. 9 Sleepy Hollow, 2-1 in penalty strokes. The game was all even at 1-1 after regulation and the two 10-minute 7-v.-7s. Lourdes advanced by virtue of a 2-1 win in strokes. Dara Brennan, assisted by Andrea Alvarez, evened the score at 1-1 in the second half for Sleepy Hollow (5-6-7). Despite the loss, it is the third consecutive season coach Kelly Jarer has guided Sleepy Hollow to sectionals. Lourdes (7-7-3) now has the pleasure of facing No. 1 Lakeland (16-2) Saturday, 2 p.m. in a quarterfinal. … Somers, seeded 6th, defeated Pelham, the 11 seed, 1-0 on a Samantha Toscano goal in the second half, assisted by Jenna Forte. Somers (7-6-4) travels to No. 3 Putnam Valley (16-2) for a 2:30 p.m. Saturday game, also a quarterfinal. Pelham goalie Caroline McCarthy made 11 saves in defeat. … Tenth-seeded Pleasantville surprised seventh-seeded Irvington, 1-0 on a Meaghan Butler penalty stroke in the second half. Chelsea Brooks made 10 saves for the Panthers while Irvington (7-6-2) goalie Allison Gutman stopped 12 shots.  Pleasantville will be at No. 2 Rye (16-1-1) tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. quarterfinal.
