Wednesday, 10/30

Saturday, 11/1

Championship

At Lakeland, 7 p.m.

The surprise, obviously, is Lakeland being seeded first in Class B despite losing to second-seeded Rye, the 2007 state Class B champion, and third-seeded Putnam Valley. However, according to the Harbin Point System, a Class B school is awarded five points for each win over a Class A school and four points for a victory over a Class B. Because Lakeland plays in a Class A league, they had more Class A victories than Rye and Putnam Valley. However, Rye owns victories over Putnam Valley, 1-0, and Lakeland, 3-0. Prediction: Rye over Lakeland in the final. The Garnets will meet Garden City in the regional final with a trip to the state final four on the line. This will be a rematch of the 2007 title game, won by Rye in overtime on an Olivia Nabhan goal, assisted by Colleen Carey. It is a SHAME that these teams will meet in the regional final. Both deserve to be in the state final four. This will be the REAL state final.

Mamaroneck 1, Putnam Valley 0

October
20

Charlotte Gardiner scored 9:40 into the game and the defense made it stick in a 1-0 victory.

Mamaroneck’s defense was outstanding, especially in regards to Putnam Valley’s outstanding center midfielder, Ashley Morgan. The Tigers did not allow Morgan to take over and, at times, not allow her to touch the ball.

Hudson Valley teammates Ellen Williams and Gardiner drew the first-half assignment of doubling Morgan. The three were members of the 2008 gold-medal-winning scholastic women’s field hockey team.

Gardiner’s goal came on a beautiful pass from Cathleen Smith, also a member of the 2008 gold-medal team. Smith brought the ball to the top of the circle and spliced a pass between defenders to Gardiner. As Putnam Valley goalie Jackie Gallagher came out to cut down the angle, Gardiner, angling right, tucked a shot inside the right post.

In the second half, Morgan was moved to left midfield, because she said it would open up the middle for Putnam Valley. Mamaroneck countered with coach John Savage moving Anna Reddicliffe to right inner to mirror Morgan. Reddicliffe told me in a post-game interview that orders from Savage were simple: ‘She (Morgan) is not to get the ball!”

Putnam Valley’s best scoring opportunity came on its only penalty corner of the game. The insert pass went to Morgan at the top of the circle, but her rip was blocked at the defense and cleared.

Mamaroneck is now 17-0 and has yet to surrender a goal. The Tigers will be seeded first and are the prohibitive favorite to win their third sectional title since 2004.

Putnam Valley had its 14-game winning streak stopped and is now 15-2. These Tigers will either be seeded second or third. The sectional seeding meeting is Tuesday, 7 p.m. at Southern Westchester BOCES.

Sectionals – These teams are in

October
16

With five days remaining in the regular season (it concludes Wednesday) and the Class A and Class B sectional seeding meeting Tuesday (The Class C seeding meeting will be Friday, 10/24), I thought I would cite the sectional qualifiers. Some teams have clinched spots while others will be fighting to the last game. WIth this being said, here are the teams that are in. (I will add the records for the teams in our coverage area.)Class A: Unless the moon falls out of the night sky, it is safe to say Mamaroneck will be the No. 1 seed. The Tigers are undefeated and unscored on. Joining Mamaroneck is Carmel, Suffern, Arlington, John Jay-East Fishkill, Yorktown, Fox Lane, Brewster and Ossining. As of today, I think Mahopac, Horace Greeley, Scarsdale, Clarkstown South and John Jay still need to get some work done in order to qualify.Class B: Rye, also undefeated and unscored on, will draw the No. 1 seed. Now here is where it gets tricky. Even though Putnam Valley beat Lakeland and should be seeded second, the Tigers could lose the second seed based on the Harbin Point System that is used to seed. Mamaroneck coach John Savage explained to me that, based on this system, a win is worth 4 points and a tie 2 points. However, when a Class B team beats a Class A team, the win is worth 5 points. With Lakeland playing against many Class A teams, the Hornets could amass more points than the Tigers for the second seed. Joining these three teams will be Briarcliff, Sleepy Hollow, Pelham, Irvington, Somers, Pleasantville and Panas, which is having an excellent year under second-year coach Jess Fazio. I don’t know what Dover’s and Our Lady of Lourdes’ records are.Class C: Bronxville snapped a recent two-game losing streak and will be seeded first. The teams chasing Bronxville come sectional time will be Hastings, Pawling, coached by former Mahopac great June Lagan, Croton-Harmon, which is having an outstanding season for coach Melissa Alamprese-Platt, Valhalla and Rye Neck. North Salem has an outside shot, but the Tigers might have to win out. Forget this, North Salem coach Jen Butch-Frohman let me know that all Class C teams are eligible for sectionals. Thank you Coach Butch-Frohman.Of couse, this is all conjecture on my part so I could very easily be wrong. We will know for sure by 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Putnam Valley at Lakeland, 7 p.m. Tuesday

October
13

In what will be a Section 1 Class B sectional semi-final preview, Putnam Valley travels to Lakeland Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.If the season ended right now, Lakeland (13-1) would be the seeded second and Putnam Valley (12-1) would be seeded third, behind Rye. The Hornets have not allowed a goal in their last three games, since losing to Rye. The Tigers are riding an 11-game winning streak. The winner of this game should earn the second seed and a home game in the semifinals.Keep an eye on the center midfielders, Putnam Valley’s Ashley Morgan and Lakeland’s Megan Bozek. These two are creative playmakers who can take over a game if given an opportunity.

Brewster beats Bronxville; Rye takes John Jay-East Fishkill

October
13

Brewster strengthened its hold on a sectional berth with a 1-0 victory over Bronxville today. The Bears got an Emily Biondi goal 10:28 into the second half and their defense did the rest as Brewster improved to 9-5-1.

Biondi grabbed a Jess Griesinger deflected shot, on a penalty corner (Brewster’s first of the game), on the right side of the circle. Facing a difficult angle, Biondi threw a shot on goal and it somehow found its way through the maze and settled in the far left corner.

Brewster’s penalty corner defense of Elle Quinn, Biondi, Griesinger and either Casey McAlpin or Jackie Lepere, thwarted 16 Bronxville penalty corners, including seven in a six-minute span early in the second half.

Bronxville (12-3) dropped its second consecutive game, both by shut out, and is 0 for 27 on corners in its last two games.

Brewster coach Corin Racicot and Quinn both will have bragging rights as a result of the win. Racicot and Bronxville coach Jacqueline Deppe Frawley were teammates at John Jay-East Fishkill. Meanwhile, Quinn’s cousin, Lilly Santoro, plays defense for Bronxville.

The other Columbus Day game featured Rye against John Jay-East Fishkill, coached by Barb Deppe. Olivia Nabhan scored twice and had two assists and Torie Stearns had a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win. Stearns’ production is a good sign for the junior forward was injured in the opening 10 minutes against Lakeland and did not return.

Rye just keeps rolling as Emma Brinkman scored twice in a 3-0 win over Greenwich Academy in a matchup of tri-state powers. The Garnets still have not allowed a goal this season.

In other Saturday games: Freshman Shannon Scavelli scored a personal-best five goals as Lakeland beat Ossining, 6-0. … Suffern improved to 9-3-3 with three second-half goals in a 3-0 win over North Rockland. Nicole Villari was promoted to varsity and scored her first varsity goal. … Carmel (8-2-4) and John Jay-East Fishkill (7-3-2) played to a 0-0 draw as Samantha Scapoli made eight saves for coach Colette Brenneman. … Mahopac (5-5-3) received second-half goals one minute apart in a 2-2 tie with Arlington. … Second-half goals by Aileen Kurpis and Brianna Concialdi lifted Yorktown (8-6-2) to a 2-1 win over Somers (6-6-2). Eryn Tighe gave Somers a 1-0 lead earlier in the second half. … Horace Greeley (4-6-1) kept its sectional hopes alive as Maddie Hopkins scored a goal and assisted on a Gillian Leitch tally in a 2-0 win over Nyack. … Byram Hills needs to win for a shot and sectionals and the Bobcats (4-9) did this with a 2-0 win over Hen Hud on goals by Emily Spierer and Sophie Koh.

Friday’s action was highlighted by Valhalla’s 1-0 win over Bronxville, snapping the Broncos 12-game winning streak, as Lindsay New scored a second-half goal. … Croton-Harmon (5-5-3) played Pawling (6-4-3) to a 0-0 tie as Erin Flaherty made five saves. … Isabel MacKinnon and Christine Stocks traded second-half goals as Pelham (3-5-2) and Nanuet (3-7-3) were all even at 1-1. … Sara Rattigan and Sarah McCormick scored in the first half of Carmel’s 2-1 win over Clarkstown North (2-5-4), who received a first-half goal by Lauren DiBarba. … Ashley Morgan had a goal and an assist and Megan Warning netted her 16th goal as Putnam Valley (12-1) defeated Byram Hills, 5-0. … Lauren Giacovis and Melissa Colton tallied in the first half of Briarcliff’s (6-2-3) 2-1 win over Edgemont (2-7-3). Jisu Bang scored for Edgemont. … After losing to Hastings earlier this season, Aly Luiso and Lizzy Wexler scored in Rye Neck’s 2-0 victory over the Yellow Jackets (7-3-1). … Second-half markers by Margaret Souther and Margot Ehrlich gave Scarsdale a 2-0 win over Ursuline. … Andrea Alvarez had two goals and Emily Mottola two assists in a 4-1 Sleepy Hollow (4-4-5) win over Pearl River, who received a goal from Jen Lee.

Friday and Saturday games of note

October
9

Here are a few games to keep an eye on Friday and Saturday:

Friday: Bronxville at Valhalla – Bronxville is rolling, winners of 12 straight, while Valhalla is looking to right itself after a few recent losses. … Clarkstown South will be at Nyack. The Vikings have been playing well recently, and another victory here would improve their drive toward a sectional berth. … Sleepy Hollow is 3-4-5 on the season so it needs a victory as does Pearl River, which is 3-6-2, if either wants to strengthen its bid for a sectional invitation. … Suffern goes to Ossining which will be a good test for the Mounties, who have a couple of ties in itslast few games.

Saturday: I already highlighted the Greenwich Academy-Rye game on a separate post. Rockland County will be a hotbed today with Suffern travelling to North Rockland and Clarkstown North taking on Clarkstown South. The Vikings are still smarting from their 1-0 loss to the Rams late last month. It was North’s first win over South in at least nine years, according to South coach Jordan Turner. … John Jay at Brewster as the Indians are in need of wins because they are sitting precariously on the fence regarding a possible sectional berth. Brewster will be looking for a strong showing because it goes to Bronxville Columbus Day morning (10 a.m.) for a game.

The Rams are now 2-4-4 on the season. … Chloe Giordano’s goal was all Holy Child needed in a 1-0 win over Hackley. … Alyssa Conklin and freshman Emma Bozek scored in the first half of Lakeland’s 2-0 win over Brewster. … Fox Lane won for the seventh time in its last eight games as Joanna Coco scored and had an assist in a 3-0 triumph of Harrison. … Hastings bounced back from its loss to Bronxville to beat Dover, 3-1 as Erika Hinman had a goal and an assist. … Sleepy Hollow held Rye to a pair of first-half goals—Casey MacGuire and Emma Tucci—but still fell, 2-0. … Jannell Colon and Victoria Benedetto scored in the second h alf, lifting Clarkstown South over North Rockland, 2-1. Greenwich Academy at Rye, Saturday (12:30 p.m.)

October
9

You might be wondering why I would put this game up as a must see. Well, thanks to a Rye player who alerted me to this (because it was not listed on the Section 1 schedule) I suggest heading to Nugent Stadium once again for what should be an excellent game.

Greenwich Academy is not your regular private school. Greenwich Academy, coached by veteran Angela Tamaro, wins the Fairchester Athletic League every year and would more than hold its own in Section 1. Greenwich Academy plays Rye every year and usually gets the best of the Garnets, which is saying something considering Rye’s run since 2000. Last year, Greenwich Academy dealt Rye one of its two losses.  So, if you have your Saturday afternoon free and you’re interested in watching excellent field hockey, make the trip to Rye.

If I wasn’t covering a football game, I’d be there myself. However, I’d have to check with the Rye parents first to see if it was okay.
